A mantra is a word, sound, or phrase repeated to aid in your concentration while meditating. A mantra is a tool for the mind, and it allows awareness to more easily turn inward.
A mantra is not something that you utter. It is something that you want to become. Ideally, a mantra is composed of only a few words or syllables, so you can repeat it easily, without getting lost in a long phrase. Though some common mantras call upon Hindu deities, their main purpose is to cultivate awareness, intention, and elevated connection.
It's an especially good meditation tool for beginners and a type of sound technology which has profound effects on our brain waves. Mantras can be chanted out loud or to yourself, since both methods work in different and positive ways.
HOW DO MANTRAS WORK?
Many of the spiritual traditions say that the universe began with a word, or a sound from God. Sound is a form of vibration and everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency. So, by repeating the mantra, we introduce the vibrational frequency of that mantra into ourselves, so that we too begin to resonate with the words and vibration of the mantra.
Eventually, as you come to resonate at the same frequency as the mantra, the mantra gains its own momentum. At that point, "you stop focusing on the mantra, and the mantra starts focusing on you". The message is clear, mantras become a part of us and have the potential to affect us on a very deep and transformational level.
BENEFITS OF MANTRA
Mantras are said to have healing properties. By connecting to the mantra on an energetic level, it may be possible to reprogram the affected or diseased area and allow healing to occur. The influence of mantra replaces unpleasant sensations with love and positivity.
Mantras also help us on an emotional level. Most of us have experienced being caught up in a repetitive pattern of negative thoughts which can be very unpleasant and damaging. By replacing these thoughts with a mantra, we break the negative flow and reinforce a new flow that is both beneficial and positive.
Mantras are purifying. By repeating a mantra, we connect with a more pure and higher level of consciousness that can purify the mind and body.
