An Introduction to Mantras

WHAT IS A MANTRA AND HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO USE IT?

A mantra is a word, sound, or phrase repeated to aid in your concentration while meditating. A mantra is a tool for the mind, and it allows awareness to more easily turn inward.

A mantra is not something that you utter. It is something that you want to become. Ideally, a mantra is composed of only a few words or syllables, so you can repeat it easily, without getting lost in a long phrase. Though some common mantras call upon Hindu deities, their main purpose is to cultivate awareness, intention, and elevated connection.

It's an especially good meditation tool for beginners and a type of sound technology which has profound effects on our brain waves. Mantras can be chanted out loud or to yourself, since both methods work in different and positive ways.

HOW DO MANTRAS WORK?

Many of the spiritual traditions say that the universe began with a word, or a sound from God. Sound is a form of vibration and everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency. So, by repeating the mantra, we introduce the vibrational frequency of that mantra into ourselves, so that we too begin to resonate with the words and vibration of the mantra.

Eventually, as you come to resonate at the same frequency as the mantra, the mantra gains its own momentum. At that point, "you stop focusing on the mantra, and the mantra starts focusing on you". The message is clear, mantras become a part of us and have the potential to affect us on a very deep and transformational level.

BENEFITS OF MANTRA

Mantras are said to have healing properties. By connecting to the mantra on an energetic level, it may be possible to reprogram the affected or diseased area and allow healing to occur. The influence of mantra replaces unpleasant sensations with love and positivity.

Mantras also help us on an emotional level. Most of us have experienced being caught up in a repetitive pattern of negative thoughts which can be very unpleasant and damaging. By replacing these thoughts with a mantra, we break the negative flow and reinforce a new flow that is both beneficial and positive.

Mantras are purifying. By repeating a mantra, we connect with a more pure and higher level of consciousness that can purify the mind and body.

HOW TO USE A MANTRA

  1. Choose a favorite word, or a phrase for your meditation. Select something uplifting that inspires you and engages your heart. Avoid words that disturb your mind.

  1. Find a comfortable place to sit, whether it is on a chair, or on the floor. Support your posture with a cushion or a blanket. Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths. Let your mind settle.

  1. Repeat your mantra steadily and slowly, concentrating on its sound as fully as possible. Let the sound resonate in your chest. Either repeat half of the mantra when you inhale and the other half when you exhale, or repeat it on both the inhalation and the exhalation.

  1. After about 10 recitations, repeat the mantra silently by moving only your lips, then after another 10 recitations, recite it internally without moving your lips.

  1. Always return to your mantra when thoughts appear. Gently bring your attention back again and again, experiencing the internal sound as fully as you can.

  1. To bring the mantra to a close, gradually let your chanting decrease in volume until it fades away as an external sound and can only be heard internally. Then let the internal sound fade away into silence.

  1. Sit quietly for a moment to see how you feel. You may feel refreshed and calm. Or you may be flooded with thoughts and feelings from your subconscious. Regardless of your immediate reaction, keep in mind that regular practice has many benefits. It will enable you to experience the present moment more fully and make conscious choices instead of falling into habitual reactions.

Envision a red orb at the base of your spine. Feel the energy at the base of your spine shift as you repeat the mantra.

Sacral Chakra: "Creativity is flowing through me".

Envision a glowing orange ball in the lower abdominal area, the center of your creativity. Whether or not you believe you have artistic abilities, recognize you can open yourself to creativity. As you repeat the mantra, feel the energy shift in the lower abdomen.

Solar Plexus Chakra: "Sometimes letting go is the most empowering choice".

First, envision and honor what you’ve been grasping. It has served a purpose in your life. Now, allow it, and all its related stories, to float away. This mantra reminds us, sometimes letting go is the best solution.

Heart Chakra: "Giving equals receiving".

Visualize a green orb at your sternum. The heart chakra is your center of love, giving and forgiving. Imagine yourself standing next to a tree. With the inhalation, you receive the clean air that the tree filtered. With your exhalation, you give that same tree the carbon dioxide it needs to thrive. Breathe, repeat the mantra, and feel the energy shift in your chest.

Throat Chakra: "My words are like seeds".

Envision a turquoise orb spinning at your throat. The fifth chakra is your center of communication. This mantra reminds you that you have the power and the choice to plant beautiful ideas. If you plant loving, kind, inspiring words, they will grow into the beautiful stories of your life.

Third-Eye Chakra: "I am open to new ideas".

The sixth chakra, the wisdom center, is what guides you through your life. Inhale. Recite this mantra with each exhalation and feel the energy start to shift. How would it feel to try a new path, or to break an old habit or routine?

Crown Chakra: "I surrender to the highest and best that seeks to emerge through me".

The Crown Chakra is the energy center that connects you to the divine. Envision a violet orb spinning above the top of your head. Often confused with giving up or weakness, surrendering can actually be a sign of great wisdom and strength, and can bring tranquility. Inhale and exhale very slowly and deeply through the nose.
